(**Please note some of the below recommendations involve open water and whilst other Mumblers have recommended these for places to paddle we would suggest checking these out yourself and ensuring a responsible adult is present at all times)
1. Council Paddling Pools
There are 3 council provided paddling pools close by (unfortunately none in Leeds):
The three pools are free to use and are open usually from the last May bank holiday, to the first week in September.
For more details visit harrogate.gov.uk
2. Ilkley Lido
Ilkley’s lido is a great day out in the summer months (it does get very popular though!) The outdoor pool is large and there is a shallow area for younger children.
There is loads of space all around the pool to sit and walk around, lovely views and a cafe on site which is handy for ice creams! Onsite there is also a heated indoor pool (check opening times), tennis courts and ramped access.
Admission fee applies.
For more details visit the website here.
3. Hetchell Woods, Scarcroft
Hetchell Woods Nature Reserve is a great place to explore as a family, there are lots of paths to follow through the woods and some great opportunities for a game of hide and seek! There is also a tree swing and a lovely little stream to paddle in or have a game of ‘poo sticks’. This is a favourite place with my Mumblers and you can call off on the way home for ice cream at the Milk Churn!
Milner Lane, Scarcroft, LS23 6NA. Off road parking available.
4. River Wharfe at Wetherby
At the bandstand side of the River Wharfe in Wetherby, you can paddle in the shallow side near the bridge. This is also a great place to feed the ducks and go for a walk alongside the river. There is also a pebbled area to sit/sunbathe, picnic tables and at certain times of the year, the brass band is playing.
Plenty of free car parking in the Wilderness (bandstand) car park.
5. Meanwood Park
Meanwood Park is great for families, from the main bottom car park there is a playground and lovely cafe leading on to extensive walks for various abilities.
Enjoy a walk along the beck to the waterfall and back, or turning left up into the hollies, or venturing right into the woods where you can stumble across three fairy doors hidden within the trees.
A good section of beck in Meanwood Park for children to paddle is accessed from the entrance just off the ring road between Tongue Lane and Weetwood Lane on Parkside Lane.
