7 places with sandpits for children in and around North Leeds
Sandpits are a great sensory experience for children and can provide hours of fun for all ages! The texture, submerging fingers and toes, making sandcastles, destroying sandcastles; it’s such fun exploration. They also resonate summer, and for those of us who don’t fancy the long journey all the way to the seaside, are a happy alternative.
A full morning or afternoon can quite easily be spent in a sandpit. So we’ve pulled together a list of our top places with sandpits and pop up beaches this summer in and around North Leeds.
1. The Arium
A garden shop and plant nursery with the added benefit of an extremally spacious and secure children’s play area, with a number of different climbing frames, and a giant sandpit! There is also an outdoor picnic area, so if you fancy a bite to eat, their family friend café offers a range of foods including children’s sandwich boxes. There is also indoor seating, with a craft table to keep little ones entertained. And during the school holidays, they usually have family friendly events, crafts and activities.

2. Moortown Park
Opened in December 2018, a large green play space with two dedicated areas; the older section has two slides, swings and a great trim trail; whilst the younger section has a sandpit, swing and animals to climb on. There is also a track around the park which doubles as a good bike practice area for children. There are picnic benches and lots of grassed areas for ball games and flying kites in the warmer months too, so best to take a packed lunch!

3. Grasshoppers at Tong Garden Centre
Grass Hoppers is a safe and secure play space for families set in the grounds of Tong Garden Centre. You’ll find a huge outdoor adventure playground and a large indoor play area which children up to the age of 10 years old can enjoy.
The outdoor play area includes jumping pillow’s, giant sandpit, water play, race track, zip wire, Adventure play area and under 4’s pre-school area with playhouses and outdoor toys.
The indoor play area includes a bespoke play frame equipment with slides, swings, rope bridges and tunnels, challenge decks and a mirror infinity deck and sport’s court! There is a separate zone for babies and toddlers including a role play and big interactive piano for everyone to enjoy!
There’s also great food including pizzas, paninis and award-winning ice cream in Woody’s Kitchen! You can also take your own picnic to eat in the outdoor area.

4. Horsforth Hall Park
Situated towards the top of the park, there is a large play area for children called the Horsforth Integrated Play Project and at Hall Park Playground. To the far left of the play area is a large sandpit, with climbing frame, slide, seesaw and hut. Open all year, children are free to bring their own buckets and spades to enjoy.
If you wanted to make a day of it, there is also the Japanese Garden which is fun for a wander, and during the summer the bandstand houses local bands. The café at the cricket club is also very child friendly and often has a bouncy castle outside during the summer on week days too!

5. The Barn at Emsleys, Yeadon
The Barn is a great place for all the family to enjoy fun activities and free play in their indoor and outdoor areas. The garden is fully enclosed so is a safe area for children to play, with a sandpit, playhouse and many other garden toys. Access to the garden is through the main barn and is included with the normal entry price. There are plenty of picnic benches so you can eat and drink outside whilst the little ones play. And if the weather turns, there is plenty of space to play indoors too!
If you wanted to make a day of it, the café provides home-cooked food, as well as coffee and cake; and there are all sorts of different events on weekly and monthly to keep the kids entertained. NOTE: During the summer holidays, The Barn is closed to the public for 6 weeks during the week (Monday 22nd July – Friday 30th July). It is however, open on weekends to the public and will be back to normal from Monday 2nd September.

6. None Go Bye Farm Shop, Horsforth
If you fancy some indoor sandpit fun, None Go Bye Farm Shop’s play area is the place to go. It costs £2 to enter, and there is a sandpit on one side and slides, and ride-on’s on the other. With chalkboards around the edges and picnic benches to sit for a drink from the farm shop.
If you want to make more of a day of it, None Go Bye Farm Shop has lots of animals to visit too! It costs £1 for adults and 50p for children with a free bag of feed; and you can see chickens, sheep, cows, goats, pigs, and llamas galore!

7. Seasonal Pop-up Beaches
There are plenty of pop-up beaches coming to our shores this summer. Here’s our top three:
Leeds City Beach, Victoria Gardens (outside Leeds Art Gallery) open from 10th August – 1st September 2019. 10.30am – 6pm. Adults can sit back and relax on deckchairs whilst children enjoy the FREE real sand beach (don’t forget your buckets and spade!). Event media partner Heart Yorkshire will be playing a wide range of summer hits throughout the days with its very own ‘City Beach Radio’. Plus, every Sunday morning, the ‘Heart Angels’ will join in the fun with various beach games and activities.
The beach is FREE to use but entertainment around the beach does carry a charge.

Bolton Abbey Pirate Ship and Pop Up Beachopen from 13th July – 1st September 2019. The magnificent pirate ship will once again be moored on the ‘pop-up’ beach on the bank of the River Wharfe, outside the Cavendish Pavilion. Little pirates can enjoy the ship’s slide, climbing net, climbing wall, pirates’ pole and ship’s wheel! And of course, there is space to build sandcastles galore! Don’t forget your bucket and spade!

Urban Beach at Henshaws Arts & Crafts Centre open from4th – 25th August 2019. 10am-4pm. Henshaws will once again transform their Arts & Crafts Centre into an oasis of family fun.Visitors will be able to enjoy treats and refreshments from Henshaws café including wood-fired pizzas , ice creams, hot food and drink and children’s picnics to enjoy on the sand.

Piglets Adventure Farm Pop Up Beach open from 20th July – 1st September 2019. Piglets Adventure Farm is opening its first Pop Up Beach this year! 2 Acres of sand & water fun, with Beach Huts to hire for the day. You can also climb Truffles Lifeguard Tower, laze in a Hammock, take a selfie in the Giant Deck Chair, and enjoy an ice cream in Beach Bites Café. Plus so much more!
