Private tuition is big business in the UK. More than one in four 11-16 year olds have worked with a private tutor at some point. Demand for tuition has grown at a rapid pace in recent years and the UK market is now worth over £2bn. When it comes to choosing a tutor, reputation is everything. Choice Home Tutoring is trusted by thousands of students and our commitment to delivering first-class, personalised tuition is what defines us. The Good Schools Guide describes us as ‘the go-to agency for hourly tuition for families; speedy, professional and flexible’.
About us
Choice Home Tutoring was founded in 2010. With over 25 years of experience in education in their local area of Manchester, co-owners Joanne and Colin Murphy saw a growing demand for experienced and reliable tutors to work with students in their homes in order to help them maximise their learning. Our approach sees every student treated as an individual, and our commitment to providing exceptional tutoring that is tailored to the individual has seen Choice Home Tutoring go from strength to strength. Just as important are the tutors who work with us; they receive a level of support which is uncommon in the tutoring sector.
Why we franchised
With a reputation for exceptional tutoring well-established, we were delighted to offer Choice Home Tutoring as a franchise opportunity towards the end of 2019, promising flexibility and fulfilment, as well as financial reward. Despite the bizarre year that 2020 has been, we’re thrilled to have 4 franchisees already on board and we foresee enormous potential for Choice Home Tutoring due to our distinctive approach and ethos.
What we do
One-to-one tuition is our core business. We provide private tuition to students of all ages, either in their own homes or online, covering all primary and secondary education subjects. We also offer group tuition workshops during school holidays and weekends with the aim of giving students an intensive boost to learning or to prepare for exams. In addition to our core offering, we also work with other agencies, such as schools and elite sports clubs, and we provide tutors who specialise in helping students with dyslexia, autism or other special educational needs.
What makes us different?
Our growth and success have stemmed from our commitment to the high quality and personalised approach which permeates through everything we do – not just in the tuition we provide but also in the relationships we forge with customers and tutors alike. We have the firm belief that we are only as successful as the quality of our tutors. In order to maintain and improve the service we offer to customers, we constantly monitor tutor performance levels and rely heavily on customer feedback.
Who are we looking for?
We’re happy to hear from people from all professional backgrounds – our franchisees don’t need a background in education, although it is clearly beneficial. We’re looking forintelligent and driven individuals who are professional in their approach, and self-disciplined, organised and passionate about making their business a success. One of the many benefits of the role is that it allows you to operate from home, giving you full control over your work schedule and enabling you to enjoy the benefits of a flexible work/life balance.
Value for money
The service we provide for our customers is second to none. For prospective franchisees, our initial franchise fee is extremely competitive when compared to tutoring business franchises with a similar offering. The initial franchise fee for a Choice Home Tutoring franchise business is £17,500 + VAT for which we can offer funding support if required. You’ll be investing in an extremely robust business which continues to flourish despite the Covid-19 pandemic.
High quality training
For your initial fee you’ll receive a turnkey package to get your business up and running straight away. This includes comprehensive induction training (which can be online if needed) covering all aspects of operating a Choice Home Tutoring franchise business, including:
In addition you’ll receive an exclusive territory, your own fully supported mini website, a 3 month social media launch campaign, your own @choicehometutoring.co.uk email address, our detailed operations manual (300+ pages) and our launch marketing package (including 5000 fliers, 250 business cards, banners, T-shirt, umbrella & gazebo).
Ongoing support
Once we have helped you launch your business, we remain constantly on hand and, as a minimum, we hold 1:1 meetings with you on an ongoing weekly basis to offer advice, guidance and strategic business planning. The support we offer is crucial to your growth and we provide it on the premise of ‘whatever is required’ – particularly during your first year of operation.
Earning potential
We know from experience that a Choice Home Tutoring franchise will reward the effort you put in. Our detailed financial modelling will identify potential profit levels based on expected numbers of students, charge rates and tutor pay rates within your territory, and forms part of your franchisee recruitment process. Your territory will contain approx. 30,000 5-19 year olds in order to maximise success within your target market. Your developed franchise could deliver 1000+ hours of tuition per month utilising 100+ tutors and may generate an annual turnover of over £300,000.

What our franchisees say
“It’s been a brilliant experience launching a franchise with Jo and Colin to support… They offer the benefit of their years of experience building a successful and caring tuition company. It feels really safe to work as part of the franchisee group because you’re running a business model you already know can succeed… It’s been a really rewarding experience…”
Jo Boon (Choice Chorlton – joined Dec. 2019)
“Although we are highly experienced as teachers (and parents!), we did not have much business experience, and the prospect of setting up our own tutoring service was too daunting. Colin and Jo made the whole experience of us setting up our franchise not only possible, but smooth in every way... Their training is of the highest quality… They are extremely professional and personal in their approach, genuinely believe in the service they are offering, and are always open to suggestions as to how to improve. We know they will always be there for us…”
Julie Bradley & Lianne Moore (Choice Stockport – joined Feb. 2020)
Jo Boon joined Choice Home Tutoring in December 2019. Here she answers some common questions:
- What motivated you into making the decision to run your own business?
I really value having the independence to set my own schedule and make my own decisions in my working life. If you have an idea of how to grow, you can go for it and put that into practice. For me, it was very much about wanting to run a tuition business though. Supporting children and working in the local community is really rewarding.
- Why a franchise? Why not go it alone?
Whilst it’s great to have independence, it can also be intimidating. Working within a structured environment as part of a successful business model that already exists clearly has perks.
- What made you choose Choice Home Tutoring?
I’d worked for Choice as a tutor and really enjoyed the experience and ethos of the company. It’s grown locally out of a need for what it does, rather than being a salesy environment. Jo and Colin are very personable and the opportunity to replicate their success was appealing.
- What has surprised you the most and have there been any negatives?
I think the last year in general has been surprising and has certainly come with challenges. That in itself has taught me new skills, however, and the business has proven its resilience.
- What would you say to someone who is a little apprehensive about signing up to a franchise?
Firstly, I would completely understand – it’s a big decision. Talk to others who have done it, take your time and do your research. I have a couple of friends who run businesses and it’s reassuring to bounce around ideas and be reminded that growth can take time. Make sure your finances are in order and if the existing company is something you believe in then go for it.
