With school out for Christmas, and after a morning dragging the Mini Mumblers around on last minute Christmas jobs, I took them for a festive afternoon tea treat ! I had heard great reviews of Dulcie Butterfly, a vintage tearoom on the high street in Boston Spa but we had never visited so when I saw that they had a festive afternoon tea offering I got us booked in! If you’re looking for a treat to get you through January they have a special offer running – adults afternoon tea for £10 per person! (*pre booked only, see Facebook Page for more details)
From the moment we parked up and saw the quaint looking tea room we knew it wouldn’t disappoint! The tea room is really quirky and as well as serving afternoon tea, sandwiches, soups, homemade cakes and scones it also has a shabby chic gift shop!
I must admit I did feel nervous when I saw the vintage china crockery set out that it might not be the best place for the youngest but I was soon put at ease as there is such a relaxed atmosphere and the staff couldn’t have been more welcoming.
The Mini Mumblers had never had an afternoon tea so when the cake stand appeared with all their favourite things in one place they couldn’t wait to tuck in! They had the festive afternoon tea which included a round of sandwiches each (they could choose from cheese, ham, tuna or jam on white or brown bread), there was a lovely decorated bun, crisps, gingerbread men and a range of festive chocolates. There was a range of drinks for them to choose from, we opted for the pink lemonade and hot chocolate which came loaded with marshmallows! At the end, they also got to decorate their own festive gingerbread biscuits which they loved! I thought the afternoon tea was great value at £10 per child and for anything that was left over we got bags to take it home in. On the way home both children asked when we could return with daddy!
I opted for the normal afternoon tea (strange I know but I am not a mince pie fan!), I could choose two sandwich fillings and it also included crisps, a homemade jam and cream scone and I could choose a homemade cake (I had Spiced Gin, Marshmellow & Chocolate, Champagne, Victoria and Hazelnut & Coffee to choose from). It was a very hard choice! I had the chocolate orange hot chocolate which was AMAZING! There was a range of flavours to choose from as well as Yorkshire Tea! The full menu can be found here.
Dulcie who owns the tearoom and her staff were so accommodating and friendly – they couldn’t do enough for the kids and really engaged with them. I also overheard them being very accommodating to a table who had food intolerances (they offer gluten-free and vegetarian options).
The tea room also accommodates a shabby chic style shop with a range of gifts for all ages, upcycled furniture, jewellery and a range of gorgeous dresses and clothing.
They also offer a range of children’s afternoon tea and crafting parties from a dedicated space downstairs. Party themes include general crafting, bunting making, canvas design, jewellery making, biscuit decorating and make over parties! They also accommodate hen parties (there is no corkage charge if you bring your own fizz to accompany your afternoon tea) and can even cater for small weddings, christenings and funerals.
The tearoom is open Tuesday – Sunday, for more details on opening hours click here.
There is not a lot of space in the tea room for pushchairs so if possible I would recommend taking younger children in carriers. Changing facilities and booster seats are available.
