Mumbler Reviews Yorkshire Born Yorkshire Fed Weaning Workshop
Our guest reviewer Kelda and her Mini Mumbler recently went along to try out Yorkshire Born Yorkshire Fed’s Weaning Workshop at Domi Domingo Hub, Burley. Find out what they thought here…
Last week I had the pleasure of attending Yorkshire Born Yorkshire Fed’s weaning workshop held at Domi Domingo Hub in Burley in Leeds. As a Mum of two, with my youngest Arthur at 7 months, I was unsure as to how much I would learn on the day as I am already well underway with weaning, however my good friend Charlotte at Mumbler asked if we would give it a try!
The 2-hour workshop was absolutely jam-packed with information and I am pleased to say I learnt a great deal despite thinking I already knew what I was doing! Yorkshire Born Yorkshire Fed is as it sounds a local small company owned and run by a fellow Mum Sophie. Sophie’s presentation was relaxed and informal; there were approximately 10 babies in the group each with their Mummies (although I am sure Dads are welcome too!) On this occasion everyone else in the session knew each other as part of the same NCT group but I understand bookings can be made as an individual or as part of a group. Sophie travels around the whole of Yorkshire using different venues depending on where suits and the 2-hour workshop costs £20 per person.
At Domi Domingo Hub Sophie had chosen a space where everyone could sit either on the floor or on a chair with their baby, you could feed and change your little one whenever needed and a small selection of toys were provided too which kept Arthur busy!
Sophie began by asking everyone to introduce themselves and the age of their baby so she could gauge the information to deliver. She gave detailed guidance regarding when is best to start the weaning process and the signs to look out for when your baby is ready. She covered the different types of weaning very thoroughly concentrating mainly on baby led weaning and a puree based approach. She discussed the pros and cons of both, emphasising the need to follow your baby’s lead and that no approach is right or wrong as long as it is healthy for your baby. She discussed the types of foods to both introduce and avoid, allergies, intolerances and how to make things as easy as possible should you decide to cook for your family altogether. She covered how much milk is needed in your baby’s diet as well as when cow’s milk can be introduced.
The workshop also included a demonstration of what a stage 1, stage 2 and stage 3 puree look like for those wanting to use a staged puree method. I have always found weaning a bit of a minefield given how many opposing opinions can be found online however Sophie did a great job of busting common myths, backing up the explanations with nutritional information.
Sophie’s background is in community health and her expertise and knowledge were evident throughout her presentation. She now also runs her own baby and toddler food company appropriately named ‘Little Puddings’ which she did tell us about however the workshop was in no way used to market the business and was very much focused on information in general as opposed to the food she also offers. Her knowledge regarding food labelling, packaging and misleading marketing was eye-opening and very interesting! The workshop price included membership to a closed Facebook group containing recipes hints and tips for weaning which I can already imagine will be a great place to share ideas with other attendees!
I would not hesitate in recommending Sophie’s workshops to any parents wanting to learn and understand more about weaning. I would say it is ideal for first time parents with babies around 4 months old when they are just beginning to get organised for their weaning journey or alternatively second/third/fourth or even fifth time parents just wanting to have a bit more information this time around!
Yorkshire Born Yorkshire Fed Weaning Workshops last 2 hours and are run at a number of locations. You can also arrange for private workshops with friends at a chosen venue.
