If you haven’t been to Stump Cross Caverns then add it to your must do list this summer! There is something for all the family – including the dog!
The Cavewoman will share the tales of the caverns with children and adults alike, exploring the history and beauty of the caves and the attraction’s fun, prehistoric world of adventure.
Visitors to the ancient limestone caves, first uncovered in 1860, will be able to spot the Cavewoman giving tours of the caves, greeting families, and even baking homemade cakes in Stump Cross Caverns’ on-site café.
Lisa Bowerman, co-owner of Stump Cross Caverns and the newly-crowned Cavewoman, said:
‘The Cavewoman really embodies the feeling of discovering and experiencing new things, and growing your mind to uncover new opportunities. We wanted to give the children who visit us a fun, enthusiastic character who could share with them the history and the stories of the caves. She’s here to educate them about the need to respect the caves in a way that’s fun, accessible and memorable.’
Stump Cross Caverns is working closely with Mark Shepherd of 3D virtual experience company Apollo3D, costume designer Victoria at Incredible Creations, and copywriter Laura Barritt to bring the Cavewoman character to life.
The pandemic has been a challenging time for the Bowerman family, owners of Stump Cross Caverns. After a significant loss of income due to forced closure of the attraction, the family launched a number of crowdfunding appeals to raise vital funds to protect jobs and save the caves.
Crucial money was needed to recover losses and, after an unsuccessful bid for government funding, fundraising appeals were launched. These included entering the family’s own apartment and luxury VW campervan into prize draws to pay for essential repair and maintenance work on the site.
Lisa added:
‘The last 15 months have really tested our resilience. It’s why the character of the Cavewoman and her message about overcoming adversity is so important. Her lesson is all about digging deep and finding your inner strength. By showing her love for the caves and sharing their history, she’s
preserving the past to protect the future.’
The Cavewoman will be making her first appearance at Stump Cross Caverns at the start of the school summer holidays. Lisa then hopes to spread the message of empowerment and positivity on a wider scale, introducing the Cavewoman character to children in local hospitals
