Walk to Remember 2020

Sue Ryder Wheatfields Hospice has launched ‘Walk to Remember’, a new walking event for people to celebrate the lives of loved ones who are gone but not forgotten.

Families, friends, colleagues or individuals can complete their walk for someone special any day throughout October or join hundreds of others across the country for the official walk day on Saturday 17th October.

Participants are encouraged to personalise their walk by choosing the distance, start and finish line, and a route or location that means something special to them. They can also share their photos, videos and messages with other walkers on the dedicated Walk to Remember Facebook group.

Members of Bramhope and Horsforth Fundraising Group will be taking part in Walk to Remember and have chosen to walk from the hospice in Headlingley to their usual meeting place in Bramhope. Member Christine Lazenby said: “The Bramhope and Horsforth support group is a group of individuals who have reason to be grateful to Wheatfields for the care that has been given to members of our families when they needed it most.

We have not been able to do our usual fundraising events this year but the Walk to Remember gives us the opportunity to join in the walk and to raise money in a different way. We all have our own special memories but the things we have in common are the gratitude that we feel.”

The virtual event is free to enter, but any funds raised through sponsorship and donations will go a long way to help Sue Ryder Wheatfields Hospice continue to provide expert and compassionate care to people with life-limiting conditions. For example, fundraising £145 as a team could fund a Sue Ryder Nurse for a day.

Donna Woodman, Head of Hospice Fundraising at Sue Ryder Wheatfields Hospice, said: “With all of our fundraising events postponed or cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic, we are experiencing a major loss of income. We hope that this special event will provide a way for people to remember loved ones, take in the beautiful Autumn scenery and help us continue to be there for people when it matters.”
