1.HIDE IT!!
Ohhhhhh back in the days that I worked in summer camps this was one of our favourite time-filling hacks. If you’re facing another lunch of sandwiches, crisps and a snack then hide the various items around the house, garden… wherever! We’ve all got creative hiding easter eggs around our home (and think of the fun1) this time it’s just with packed lunch items. Need inspiration for what to put in there? Use this great list!
If you have older children and the time (or the inclination) you could even create clues (or steal the clues from this Easter Mumbler Hunt).
2. THEME IT
The best thing about themed meals is that you can make the activity last alllll day. Put on some fancy dress, make decorations, watch a movie with a related theme, play themed games. Pinterest is your friend here.
You dont even need to make anything special…Your themes could be by country (Italian themed Pizza Pasta Party?), by character (fairy lunch of babybels and ‘fruit wand’ to your right), or even by movie (Frozen and just have an ice cream dessert)!
3. PLAY WITH YOUR FOOD
4. MAKE YOUR OWN
Actually the easier the better with small children. Let them make the sandwiches (have you tried sandwiches on sticks before?). Put toppings on a pizza. Bake some buns. Let them get their hands messy.
Want to make it all last a bit longer? Get them to draw their sandwich or pizza designs before they make them. Can they create pictures with their toppings too?
5. EAT IT SOMEWHERE DIFFERENT
As a treat, dont just eat it at the kitchen table. Put a picnic rug out on your lawn or in your living room. Build a den (indoors with cushions and sheets if it’s wet) and eat it in there. Go to your local park and enjoy the fresh air, or even hide in the garden shed. It really doesn’t matter. Just eating sandwiches in a new place makes them a little less like sandwiches.
