The story behind ChicksThatKick…………
Hello! My name is Laura. I’ve always loved playing football, even though as a young girl I didn’t have the chances to play it very much. Some of my happiest childhood memories are of kicking a ball around at breaktimes and lunchtimes at Primary School, as well as occasionally at picnics and BBQs when I was brave enough to join in with the boys.
Over the years I’ve always loved a kickaround….a bit of 5-a-side at University, making up numbers for the men’s team at a company I once worked for and, of course, playing football with my own children.
Due to a huge historical lack of opportunities for girls to play, it wasn’t until later in life that I finally found a group of women to play with, allowing me to play up to three times per week on various surfaces and pitch sizes, with time slots throughout the week to fit around my family.
I love everything about football; the adrenaline, the teamwork, the endorphins, the thrill of scoring a goal, participating in the lead-up to one or preventing one from being scored the other way! I love learning the technical and tactical aspects of the game, studying skills videos, reading football autobiographies and I’m an avid follower of the WSL and Women’s Champions League.
I love how football teaches you to immediately bounce back from mistakes on the pitch, think on your feet and continuously strive to improve. I also love the camaraderie and comedy that comes with playing a team sport!
The joy that football has given me (even if later on in life), has inspired me to make a difference. Two years ago, a friend and I set up a girls’ team at our local club. It took off very quickly and within a few months, we had 22 girls playing in the Under 7s age group. Following on from that, we set up an Under 6 team too, which now has another 16 players in it and I realised three things:
· I ABSOLUTELY LOVE COACHING
· THERE IS DEFINITELY A REQUIREMENT FOR GIRLS-ONLY FOOTBALL SESSIONS
· PASSING ON MY LOVE OF THE GAME TO GIRLS AND PROVIDING THEM WITH OPPORTUNITIES THAT I DIDN’T HAVE IS AN AMAZING FEELING!!
I started to think about how great it would be if girls were encouraged to start playing football from the moment they could walk, just like the boys! I completed my FA training courses…..
and…..
