Advertorial blog for Gold Tutors
“More of the different, please”
Picture your most productive place to work.
Is it the sofa, the kitchen table or the garden? Perhaps you prefer sprawling on the floor? How about the temperature? The light; just enough (natural) light and a touch of background music? Is there a drink by you, or a snack of some type?
Now consider your child. What would they say?
Whilst I can’t speak for every child, I could guarantee that the majority would not pick a hard plastic chair, a stuffy room and headache – inducing strip lights.
In 2015, The University of Salford commissioned a study into the effects of different learning environments and found, perhaps unsurprisingly, “that students perform better in classrooms that feel comfortable and familiar.”
Lucy Patrick, lecturer at the School of Education and Childhood at Leeds Beckett University and cofounder of GOLD tutoring has very clear ideas about what children engaging in extra curricular tuition need, and it is not “more of the same.”
“We expect children to sit for long periods on chairs or hard surfaces in classrooms which were designed long ago and do not offer the best learning experience for many pupils and often they are then asked to do extra curricular work in the same sort of environment after school. How is this conducive to the best learning?
GOLD – Guaranteed Outstanding Learning and Development Tutors are all outstanding, qualified teachers who are proud to be leading the way in individual and small group tuition. They are the people who parents desperately want to be their child’s teacher – kind, knowledgeable and gifted educators. They all currently work in schools alongside their tutoring work, meaning they are up to date with the very best practice, and many are specialists in inclusion, interventions and special needs.
Our workspaces are different, too; cosy coves that evolve to suit the needs of their learners. Children, do you want to do your maths in a tepee? That is fine by us. Prefer to practise your reading on a sofa? It can be arranged, no bother.
We also know that, all too often, it is the anxiety surrounding learning which prevents children from attaining rather than a lack of ability. By creating the right environment, both physical and emotional, we see children relaxed and ready to learn.
