Don’t miss Northern Ballet’s hugely popular Ugly Duckling as it returns to the stage in Leeds Stanley & Audrey Burton Theatre from the 11-15 February 2023. Charlotte and her mini Mumblers saw it in the Autumn half term and this is what they had to say about it…
The Ugly Duckling is the perfect way to introduce little ones to ballet. The costumes, lighting, staging, live music, and of course the dancing itself is absolutely magical. And at just 40minutes long it’s the perfect length to keep the children engaged and not too wriggly.
My two little ones, 3 and 5 thoroughly enjoyed the performance. My eldest was a little concerned at the beginning when the ducklings were throwing the egg about, but once the egg hatched, she was able to enjoy the rest of the show – especially the cats (her absolute favourite animal). And my youngest was mesmerised with the staging and lighting; he kept pointing out when the lights went down and loved letting me know when the staging moved around.
I also found the whole show absolutely brilliant; the costumes are so creative, the dancing spectacular, and it was such a lovely experience to share with the children. I can’t remember the last time I enjoyed the theatre and this did not disappoint.
Prior to the performance, there was a chance for the children to get more emersed in the show by taking part in some arts and crafts in the foyer. Emily got stuck in creating a duck hat and a cat mask. And we all enjoyed wandering round, guessing the clues correctly to find the hidden ducks.
We were handed a synopsis of the story as well with a crossword, dot-to-dot and colour-in duck on the back – and we have since read the story over and over again!
All in all, it was a lovely afternoon with the children, and even weeks later, Emily still recalls the whole show. I would definitely recommend!
Retelling the famous Hans Christian Andersen fairytale, Ugly Duckling is the perfect opportunity for your little ones to enjoy live ballet, music and theatre for the first time.
Ugly Duckling is lonely and fed-up, ignored by those around her who think she is too ugly to fit in. She tries to make friends with fellow ducklings as well as with frogs, cats and even a fox, but realising she is not like any of these animals, she is left sad and alone. Follow the duckling on her journey as she overcomes her troubles and learns to love herself and those around her.
