We all know how stressful planning and hosting a child’s birthday party can be! In their guest blog, Party Mums share their 10 step party planning guide which will help you plan and organise the perfect stress free party.
- Party date – If your child’s birthday falls over a bank holiday/school holidays, you may need to be flexible with your party date to ensure that guests can make it. Find a date as soon as possible.
- Location – If you’re not having the party at home, you need to book a venue. Most venues receive bookings 6-8 weeks in advance. As soon as you have decided on your ideal party date, book your venue!
- Entertainment – Parties generally last 2-3 hours. If you’ve booked a play gym or similar venue, activities are included, but if you have a village hall you’re going to need to bring in outside help. Magic shows, slime making, disco parties all book up quickly, book these services as soon as you have fixed your party date.
- Birthday cake – If you are having one made, ideally you need to order this 4-6 weeks in advance. If it’s a shop made cake, you can buy this 2-3 days before. Don’t forget candles.
- Guests – Don’t be afraid to keep the numbers small. Listen carefully to the names of the children your child plays with on a regular basis and ensure that they’re on the list. Once you have added their names and any family guests to the list, you may find the numbers are higher than you first thought.
- Invites – Kids love taking their invites to school. Don’t be tempted to skip this part and send out texts. Remember to put a date on the invite asking parents to RSVP by, this will allow you to finalise your plans.
- Food – Keep it simple, especially if you are catering yourself. Plain sandwiches including ham, jam and cheese are always popular, cucumber and carrot sticks and bowls of crisps are usually enough to refuel the kids in between activities. Add cupcakes and fruit cups for a sweet treat, or serve up the birthday cake. All these items transport easily too if you are using a venue. Drinks are best served from jugs, keep the options to juice or water.
- Decorations – Keep to a simple colour scheme. If you use plain coloured tableware and decorations, you can pick easily pick these up in your local supermarket. Adding a few items each week to your usual shop will help spread the cost too.
- Party bags – Classic toys are popular, yo-yo’s, cats cradle, bouncy balls, tattoos, pencils with toppers and mini notebooks. Don’t forget to add a handful of sweets or chocolates.
- Help – Don’t be afraid to accept help from others, especially when it comes to the clean up. Many parents are happy to serve drinks or foods to guests whilst you prepare the cake and get your camera ready.
Finally, enjoy the party – it will be over before you know it, so enjoy making some memories!
